Natural History of the Enigma, 2008, Edward Kac

-Transgenic Flowers with Human DNA Bloodline!

Sign on museum wall: "The human gene is isolated and sequenced from the artist's blood.  The
transgenic petunia, the Edunia, expresses Edward Kac's DNA exclusively in its red veins.
Fortunately, this evokes an image of human blood coursing through the flower's petals.  By
focusing on such similarities, Kac questions what humans tend to believe are unique &
irreconcilable life forms."

The artist  spliced his  DNA into a seed and it sprouted, producing petals this color

Sign on wall:  "Will be destroyed after run of exhibition in compliance with  federal and university
rules regarding the containment of genetically engineered life forms"

Atwater, Minnesota, James Rosenquist's World's Fair Mural, 1963-64 at the Weisman

Atwater - small rural town where Rosenquist's family still lives; artist was sign painter and early on embraced Pop art;
this piece makes a connection with the space race of the early '60s, when there was competition among
nations to reach the moon.
