Big Island International Marathon
Hilo, Hawaii  - March 21, 2010

Photos by participant Rodney Pygoya Chang

7 miles in the books; note ocean at horizon in the distance, visible from this former plantation town

Going downhill

So peaceful

Lovely streams and waterfalls galore

Did a painting of this location from a photo I took when I ran this marathon 5 years ago.  Really wonderful to come
back and see the actual scene again that I live with now, back in Honolulu, as a painting on canvas.

Could hear the gurgling creek as I passed by

Thank you, dear. (Why stand when you can sit?)

Hmm, another potential painting

Start to see the ocean has we run along a highway towards Hilo town

See the surfer?

A favorite surf spot just outside of Hilo

Group support at 8 miles- Mahalo, folks!

Sighting of Hilo across the bay

Note the tsunami barrier; won't stop the wave but somehow reduces its height and power before it hits land

9 mile mark; at 10 we enter Hilo town; nice downward slope here

As an artist, I love the shape of banana leaves

Ah, reached Hilo town!  Nice overcast day with intermittent rain to cool off the runners;
later in the afternoon the sun comes out and it starts to get hot and humid

Bridges right  before entering Hilo town; think it leads up to Rainbow Falls

There's the 10 mile mark

Early 20th Century Hilo bay front downtown.  I love old buildings which preserve heritage of the past.

The finish line for the half marathoners; full marathoners keep running in the left lane

It seemed we ran the same route but here I pass the 11 mile mark and just back there the half marathoners
doing 13.1 completed their run.... go figure.

I always like this scene.  The building in the back is where fisherman sell their catch straight off the boats.

Keep on Running
